Are you considering cataract surgery and wondering how to make the most of your private health insurance? I receive many questions from patients who want the best possible visual outcome but aren’t sure how their policy works when it comes to “premium” options.
In this post, we answer your most frequently asked questions about using insurance for cataract surgery and how you can access advanced lens technology even if your insurer only covers the basics.
Q: Do you treat patients from the major UK health insurers?
Yes. We are proud to provide expert cataract care to patients insured by all th
e UK’s leading health insurance providers, including:
-
Bupa
-
AXA Health
-
Aviva
-
Vitality Health
-
WPA
-
Cigna (Simplyhealth)
Q: What does “Fee Assured” mean for me?
I am a fee-assured consultant. This means that for the standard cataract procedure, my professional fees are aligned with the limits set by your insurance company (such as Bupa or AXA). In most cases, this means you will have no “hidden” consultation or surgical gaps to pay for the standard procedure, subject to your policy’s excess.
Q: My insurance only covers “Standard” lenses. Can I still have a Premium lens?
Most health insurers will only fund the cost of a standard monofocal lens. While these are high-quality, they typically mean you will still need glasses for either distance or reading (and often both) after surgery.
The good news: Even if your insurer doesn’t pay for premium lenses (like Multifocal, Trifocal, or Toric lenses for astigmatism), I offer these options to all my insured patients.
Q: How does the “Top-Up” process work?
If you wish to upgrade your vision to reduce your dependence on glasses, you can “top up” your treatment.
Through your insurance, the cost of the hospital facility, the standard surgical fee, and the basic lens cost are covered. You would simply pay an additional supplement directly to cover:
-
The Premium Lens: The cost difference for advanced optics.
-
Enhanced Surgical Precision: Any additional refractive planning required for premium outcomes.
This allows you to leverage your insurance benefit while still choosing the lifestyle-enhancing technology you truly want.
Q: How much does it cost to upgrade?
The price of the top-up varies depending on the specific lens technology used (e.g., whether we are correcting for astigmatism or providing a full range of vision with a trifocal lens).
During your consultation, we will discuss your visual goals, perform detailed measurements, and provide a transparent quote for the top-up amount.
Take the Next Step Toward Clearer Vision
Don’t feel restricted by “standard” insurance packages. You have the right to choose the best technology for your eyes.
